Below are a few tips that we think will aid students in their preparation for graduation:

  • Be sure to check your name as it appears in the system through Student Central. This is how it will be on your diploma. Observe the deadline by which name changes must be completed. Remember, there is a $25 charge to have a name change on your diploma.

  • Verify your permanent grade/billing address. This is where your diploma will be mailed.

  • Remember that temporary grades (IN, AB, and SP) take time to be changed to permanent grades. Take care of these well before graduation.

  • Be reminded that to graduate "with Distinction" or "with Highest Distinction" one must have completed at least 45 academic hours at UNC-CH and have obtained an overall grade point average of at least 3.5 and 3.8 respectively.

  • If you are taking a correspondence course to fulfill your last requirements:

    • Let the instructor know that you plan to graduate at the end of the semester.

    • Make sure all work is completed by 4 weeks prior to graduation.

    • Arrange to take the final exam by the last day of exams. Begin this process at least 3 weeks prior to graduation. Your graduation will depend on the early arrival of your grade at the University Registrar's Office.

  • Check your degree candidacy. Is it correct?

  • Check Student Central and the University Registrar's website often to ensure that your permanent records are complete and accurate.

  • Visit the UNC Commencement website for information concerning the December (includes August/Summer & December/Fall graduates) or May commencement ceremony. In May the site will provide a list of masters, doctoral, and professional diplomas that will be available for distribution immediately following May Commencement until 2 p.m. in Suite 3100, SASB North, unless your department is having a departmental ceremony. A schedule of the special ceremonies is available as well.

You will also find other important commencement information at this site. Keep in mind that all undergraduate and some graduate students are mailed their diplomas after the May Commencement. In December all diplomas are mailed after the December Commencement.

  • A privacy flag on your record prohibits any information to be given about you, for example, to prospective employers or for publications like the Commencement Program. You can request in writing that the privacy flag be lifted for the purpose of printing your name in the Commencement Program. The Registrar's Office will send a letter to this effect in time to process your request before the printing of the December or May Commencement Program.

  • A stop placed on your record that is not cleared by the deadline communicated by the Registrar's Office will prohibit you from receiving your diploma.
