Residency Classification - Vista of the Appalachian Mountains that sweep across western North Carolina.

You are required to notify your Admissions Office if, since the original establishment of your current residence classification, your state of legal residence has changed.

  1. If you are currently classified as a resident-for-tuition-purposes, it is your obligation to petition for a change in classification to nonresident if you have reasonable basis for believing that a change in your situation requires such a change in classification. Failure to fulfill this obligation may result in appropriate disciplinary action. The University may review your residence classification at any time. If it is determined that you have become a nonresident, the date of change in your tuition rate will be the beginning of the next term following the date of change in your situation which required the change on classification (unless you are deemed eligible to pay the in-state tuition rate under the statutory twelve month grace period).

  2. If you currently are classified as a nonresident, it is your right to apply for a change to resident if you now and, for at least the preceding twelve months, have met the requirements for residence-for-tuition-purposes. If it is determined that you have met the requirements, the effective date of change in your tuition rate will be the beginning of the next term after the requirements were met.

Copies of the applicable North Carolina Statutes and the North Carolina Residence Manual, which govern classification decisions, are available for inspection upon request at any Admissions Office. You are responsible for being familiar with the contents of these two sources of regulation. Any questions concerning residence-for-tuition-purposes should be addressed to the Admissions Office through which you were last admitted or to which you are applying for admission. Alternatively, you may address your questions to residency@unc.edu.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT RESIDENCY AND TUITION PAYMENT

If you register for a term before a final decision has been made on your residency application or appeal, you must pay tuition at the nonresident rate. If you are later reclassified as a resident-for-tuition-purposes for that term, you may have the tuition differential refunded to you or applied toward the next semester's tuition payment.

If you withdraw from the University during the semester, tuition and fees will be prorated over a period of nine weeks, at a rate of one-tenth of the semester bill each week, after deduction of an administrative charge. If you drop the only course you are taking, this constitutes a withdrawal from the University. If you have a residency application or appeal pending for a given term and you do not register for that term, no further action will be taken on your application or appeal.
